Hurricane Iris struck a narrow swath through the Maya populated areas of Toledo District of southern Belize in October, 2001. Winds were 145 miles per hour, category 4. Heliconia Haven was virtually destroyed and the center image below is what remained of Cecropia Camp. In February-March of 2002 we rebuilt. The cohune palm trees were so heavily damaged that thatch was no longer an option for roof material, and we were forced to go with tin.
