froggie btn.gif (1909 bytes) I had planted some trees before.  Now,
I established a small nursery and
increased the pace of planting.  Most
trees and plants are grown from collected
seeds (
see "Botanical Section").

During earlier visits, I was fortunate to
meet and become close friends with a
neighbor, Charles Wright (
see Tribute...)
We shared many common interests in
nature, plants, and Maya culture.  He
was an invaluable source of inspiration
and information.  Through him I engaged
the services of a wonderful Maya family,
who continue to share Heliconia Haven
with me. It would not be the same
without them.

The Farm Road - Charles lived at
the end, and Heliconia Haven is at
milepost 1.

Andres and his sons do most of the
routine chopping ("machete mowing")
of Heliconia Haven.  They also farm his
forty acre leased farm and another
beautiful 30 acres inherited from his
father.  Andres plants rice and corn plus permanent crops of citrus, cacao,
and fruit trees and is now also planting hardwoods such as mahogany.

Though poorly educated themselves, in
the formal sense, Andres and his wife,
Cristina, have encouraged their
children in school.  Vicente, Jose,
Manu, and the twins, Andrea and
Andres Jr. have done much to make Heliconia Haven my true home.
Andres Tot and family - thank you.
