Mother and Child (Manatee Tears) In 1996, while exploring Belize's coastline south of the Deep River estuary, I came upon two campsites used by manatee hunters. At each, entire skeletons of these docile endangered animals were found. They had been slaughtered for their meat. I collected the evidence and offered it to local environmentalists, who did not want the skeletons. I created this necklace, from mother and child ribs to epitomize the tragedy.
